Nigel Irens Design Ltd | Managing Director
Nigel has been at the forefront of cutting-edge yacht design for over 40 years, and has been fundamental in pushing design boundaries and experimenting with cutting-edge materials and techniques.
Nigel’s biggest achievements include designing Ellen MacArthur’s round-the-world, record-breaking trimaran, B&Q Castorama, and Francis Joyon’s 97ft trimaran IDEC, which set three world records for solo circumnavigation in 57 days, six hours, a 24-hour solo run of 666.2 miles averaging 27.75 knots and a solo transatlantic in five days, two hours.
But Nigel’s skills stretch much further than multi-hull design. Among other well-know projects, his space-age powerboat Royale Atlantic has been successfully used as a filming platform for both inshore and coastal racing for the ORMA 60 racing circuit. With a maximum speed of 32 knots she is fast enough to keep up with the fleet but also agile enough to get camera crews close to the action – with a low level of wash to avoid disturbing the racing fleet. In recent times the vessel was chartered as media boat to follow the America’s Cup World Series events around the world.
Nigel has worked with some of the biggest names in the industry, and has been fundamental in breaking through barriers in design and engineering in high-tech racing. We are privileged to have him onboard as a speaker at this year’s CMC and we’re looking forward to his insights into the future of design in the marine industry.
